Veneers
Madras Glass & Plywood Depot provides an exclusive range of world class Veneers, which are efficient to meet your exact requirements. Woodworking veneer is thin slices of wood, usually thinner than 3 mm (1/8 inch), which are typically glued onto core panels - wood, particle board or medium density fiberboard to produce flat panels like doors, tops and panels for cabinets, parquet floors and parts of furniture. A variety of timbers is selected with special care and keeping in mind the accuracy to ensure that we get the most suitable wood for slicing. The veneer is considered of higher quality if it is made from woods with unique features such as burls, pommels, figures, and so forth. Quality is also determined by factors such as availability, structure, and dimensions. It is placed around objects such as jewellery boxes. There are three types of veneer-making machines used commercially:

• A Rotary Lathe: The wood is turned against a very sharp blade and peeled off in one continuous or semi-continuous roll. Rotary-cut veneer is mainly used for plywood, as the appearance is not desirable because the veneer is cut concentric to the growth rings.

• A Slicing Machine: The flitch or piece of log is raised and lowered against the blade and slices of the log are made. This makes veneer, which looks like sawn pieces of wood, cut across the growth rings.

• A Half-Round Lathe: The log or piece of log can be turned and moved in such a way to expose the most interesting parts of the grain.

Patterns

There many types of "patterns" common to veneered work, which refers to the way the veneers are laid up.

• Book Matched: Where the veneers are opened from the flitch like the pages of a book.

• Slip Matched: Where the pieces are joined together in order they come from the flitch, and have the same face kept up.

• Radial Matched: Where the veneer is cut into wedge shaped pieces and joined together.

• Diamond Matched: Where the pattern formed is diamond shaped.

Veneer Edge Bandings
These veneers, called "edge bandings" are strips of veneer joined continuously head-on in the direction of the grain. Edging machines with continuous action have been developed, which apply them using thermosetting glues veneer joined continuously head-on in the direction of the grain. At the same time edge bandings have been developed according to various requirements. These are usually supplied in strips of varying lengths (standard 7', 8’).

Bearing in mind the production requirements, these edge bandings are produced in various thicknesses ranging from 1 mm to 2mm, and 14 to 300mm wide or is in widths as required whenever necessary according to the end use (curves etc). A worthwhile innovation is the development of edge bandings which are 2mm thick or more (veneer laminate) which are produced by gluing together various wood species. These edge bandings are produced in lengths according to the logs in case of natural woods and in fixed measures (of 7' to 8'). We can provide these widths according to customers’ requirements. This solution is ideal for producing rounded edging with a radius that is not obtainable by using wood beadings which are insufficiently thick.
